Thomasina Bateman, an antiquarian has been writing a book about the barrows in England. It’s going to record the treasures that she discovers inside. A compelling letter inspires her to visit the tiny village of Bewlay located in rural England. She travels there by train and her companion the next day.
The mysterious person who called her to her rescue is not there upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. The landowner is obstinate in refusing access to the barrow, and the locals are wary of this woman who is walking on her own as well (gasp!) wears trousers.
Hob’s Barrow excavation is off to an uneven beginning. Then Thomasina experiences strange visions…
